Schelden doet geen zeer, maar belasterd worden is iets anders

Wij weten niet of wij obsessief zijn, maar wij weten wel zeker dat wij een gelijkhebberige klootzak zijn, dus als iemand leugens over ons verkondigt, worden wij boos. Nu we er over nadenken: wij kunnen ons zomaar voorstellen dat mensen die geen gelijkhebberige klootzak zijn ook boos worden als mensen leugens over ze verkondigen, dus hadden we die eerste zin eigenlijk net zo goed weg kunnen laten en deze dan ook. En zo zouden we nog uren door kunnen gaan.

Ter zake: onlangs heeft de Amerikaanse Carrie Poppy ons op Twitter uitgemaakt voor een “rape apologist & men’s rights activist”. Schelden doet geen zeer, maar er is een verschil tussen schelden en belasteren en van belasterd worden houden wij niet.

Omdat Carrie Poppy tot ons leedwezen een forse plaat voor haar harses blijkt te hebben en nog veel gelijkhebberiger blijkt te zijn dan wij, plaatsen wij hier zonder verder commentaar de imeels die wij tot nog toe met haar hebben uitgewisseld. Mocht u hieruit kunnen opmaken dat wij wel degelijk een “rape apologist & men’s rights activist” zijn, dan horen wij dat graag van u en als u het ons kunt uitleggen, worden wij zelfs blij, want wij leren graag bij.

Het eerste mailtje was een antwoord van Carrie Poppy op onze via haar webzijde gedane suggestie dat zij een twiet van ons verkeerd begrepen had. Daarna wijst het zich vanzelf.

Zij:

“I understood your tweet completely.“

Wij:

“I don’t think so.

Maybe we can sort this out.

What exactly do you think I tried to say?“

Zij:

“You were telling one person, who seems like a nice enough guy, not to waste his time telling people the obvious.“

Wij:

“Yes, I was.

My reasoning was that people who think all muslims are terrorists are probably not the kind of people who will be convinced by a muslim saying he is not and that people who don’t think all muslims are terrorists aren’t really interested in a muslim saying he is not, because they know that already.

Is that wrong?“

Zij:

“I do not owe you any conversation. I understood your tweet already; I’ve responded to it already.“

Wij:

“You don’t owe me anything. Nobody says you do.

I would have liked a normal answer to a straight question though.

Never mind.“

Zij:

“The answer is still yes. Bye.“

Wij:

“Since you didn’t answer the question, the answer can’t be “still yes”.

But let’s assume you mean your answer to “My reasoning was that people who think all muslims are terrorists are probably not the kind of people who will be convinced by a muslim saying he is not and that people who don’t think all muslims are terrorists aren’t really interested in a muslim saying he is not, because they know that already. Is that wrong?” is yes. In that case I would really like to know why that is wrong.

So, here goes: why is that wrong?“

Zij:

“BYE AGAIN.“

Wij:

“Yes, bye.

I’m sorry I thought you were a reasonable person who might be interested in clearing up a misunderstanding and I know now that you’d rather stick to your own preconceptions than see if you could be wrong.

For someone who calls herself an “investigative journalist” such an attitude might be a drawback, but that’s not my problem.

And I’d still like an answer to the question why it is wrong to give someone some friendly and reasonable advice.

Something tells me I won’t get it from you.
